LOS ANGELES – Chair Hilda L. Solis released the following statement after the Board of Supervisors approved her motion to proclaim October as “Breast Cancer Awareness Month” and to support the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Los Angeles event:
“Given the devastating impacts of the pandemic, including the delay of preventive care practices like breast cancer screenings, this year’s Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk is more important than ever.
The National Cancer Institute (NCI) estimates that almost 10,000 excess deaths will occur in the US from breast and colorectal cancer alone over the next decade because of pandemic-related screening and treatment delays. That is why, at my direction, the County will direct resources and personnel to support this year’s walk and elevate messaging around the importance of breast cancer screenings.
It is critical that this messaging reaches far and wide, particularly among historically underserved communities that are low-income and people of color. By directing resources and support to this campaign, we can help remind residents on the importance of breast cancer prevention and honor those who have survived it.”
The passage of this motion proclaims the month of October as “Breast Cancer Awareness Month”; Directs County departments to support the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Los Angeles event on Saturday, October 16, 2021, by registering and supporting fundraising efforts; Directs the County Departments’ Public Information Officers to promote and distribute materials related to the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Los Angeles event; Directs all County Departments’ wellness coordinators to promote the 2021 Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Los Angeles event and encourage colleagues to participate and support it; Promotes the American Cancer Society’s “Get Screened” campaign with special efforts to reach communities that have been historically marginalized; Permits LA County staff participants, breast cancer survivors and Making Strides Against Breast Cancer VIPs to park for free at the Music Center Garage the day of the event.
