LOS ANGELES, CA – Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors Chair Hilda L. Solis, Supervisor to the First District, released the following statement after the Board of Supervisors approved her motion to assess the need for extending clinic and site hours for COVID vaccinations to reach more vulnerable residents.
“We are at a critical point in the vaccine roll-out where it is imperative that we develop and implement systems to best assist vulnerable populations in gaining access to life-saving COVID vaccines.
While supply shortage has been a key issue, we are at an inflection point where three types of vaccines are now available and supply will increase. That is why we must leverage our current resources and personnel to best determine what practices are working in our efforts to ensure an equitable distribution of the vaccine.
Through this motion, we can explore the expansion of vaccine clinic and site hours to ensure that our essential and frontline workers who cannot make an appointment during set hours in the day can access the vaccine after-hours and on weekends. It is our responsibility to meet our community members where they are not only in the community but when they are available.
We must ensure that all people in the County, regardless of race, creed, or immigration status, get vaccinated if we are to ever achieve a truly healthy County, and this means providing COVID-19 vaccines at hours when essential workers and others can get to the clinics, be it early morning or overnight.”
The passage of this motion instructs the Department of Health Services and Department of Public Health, working with labor partners, to assess the need for extending clinic hours, including cost to operate overnight and report back in 21 days. In addition, it instructs the County Emergency Operations Center in coordination with Incident Command to assess the effectiveness of current hours of operation at County-run large vaccination sites and develop a strategy to increase operational effectiveness and efficiency at the County-run sites with a report back in 14 days.
