Los Angeles, CA – With a true commitment to community, Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors Chair Hilda L. Solis, Supervisor to the First District, continues to support both the Biden Administration and Governor Newsom in their efforts to resettle Afghan nationals through strong partnerships with community-based organizations, including Baby2Baby and Miry’s List:
“Los Angeles County continues to welcome immigrants and people seeking refuge, and we are steadfast in our commitment to ensuring that newly-arrived families from Afghanistan receive resources to successfully resettle in our county,” shared Chair Solis Solis. “Through a partnership with Baby2Baby and Miry’s List, we were able to deliver mattresses and diapers to families in need, some of whom did not have a bed to sleep on for more than a week. We will continue our efforts to support these families with resources as well as basic necessities.”
“Baby2Baby is assisting Afghan refugee children across the country and we are proud to support Supervisor Solis in her efforts to welcome them to Los Angeles during this difficult time,” said Norah Weinstein and Kelly Sawyer Patricof, Co-CEOs of Baby2Baby. “By providing diapers, blankets, clothing, shampoo, soap and more to families, Baby2Baby helps ensure children have the essentials they need to start their new lives in their new homes.”
“Miry’s List is encouraged by the outpouring of support toward our families and programs at this critical time,” said Miry Whitehill, founder of Miry’s List. “The mattresses and childcare essentials donated by Supervisor Solis are more than just “stuff” for new arrival families. They also send a clear message to the families: Your comfort matters. Your well-being is important. And most of all, you are welcome here in Los Angeles.”
On August 31, 2021, the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors unanimously approved Chair Solis’ motion to provide assistance to returning American personnel and new arrivals from Afghanistan. The motion directs the County’s Chief Executive Officer to establish an Afghan Refugee Task Force headed by the County’s Department of Consumer and Business Affairs’ Office (DCBA) of Immigrant Affairs in collaboration with the Office of Emergency Management, and all relevant County departments, state, federal, and non-governmental agencies at the discretion of DCBA, to provide and coordinate County resources to serve newly arrived Afghan nationals resettling in Los Angeles County. In addition, it directs the Chief Executive Office Legislative Affairs and Intergovernmental Affairs branch to send a 5-signature letter to U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken informing him of the County’s Afghan Refugee Task Force.
