Los Angeles County Supervisor Hilda L. Solis has released the following statement on today’s vote by the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors to direct the County’s legislative advocates in Sacramento to support State Senate Bill 751 (Rubio):
“I support State Sen. Susan Rubio’s bill, SB 751, which will establish the San Gabriel Valley Regional Housing Trust to fund housing for those who are low-income and individuals experiencing homelessness in the San Gabriel Valley. Single moms, senior citizens and young adults experiencing homelessness in the San Gabriel Valley deserve our attention and help. As a joint powers authority comprised of member cities of the San Gabriel Valley Council of Governments, the San Gabriel Valley Regional Housing Trust will fund the planning and construction of housing, will receive public and private financing and funds, and will authorize and issue bonds. SB 751 would ensure that this funding is used responsibly to address the homelessness crisis by requiring the regional housing trust to incorporate annual financial reporting and auditing requirements that show how the funds are advancing the regional housing trust’s objectives. There is an urgent need to respond to the growing number of individuals who lack housing in the San Gabriel Valley.
The Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority’s 2018 count for the San Gabriel Valley found that the number of people experiencing unsheltered homelessness grew to 2,790 — a 19% increase from the 2017 count. Recently, I authored a motion directing LA County’s CEO to work with cities in the San Gabriel Valley to identify city-owned and County-owned properties that could serve as interim shelters. Now is the time for all of us to come together to help our vulnerable neighbors who are experiencing homelessness.”
