Los Angeles County Supervisor Hilda L. Solis released the following statement after the Board of Supervisors approved her motion to send a five-signature letter to U. S. Rep. Grace Meng and to U.S. Sen. Kamala Harris, U.S. Sen. Mazio Hirono, and to U.S. Sen. Tammy Duckworth to express the County’s support of their bills condemning discrimination of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders due to the COVID-19 pandemic:

“Over 1.5 million Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders (AAPI) live in LA County and many of them are serving on the frontlines of the COVID-19 pandemic as essential workers. In addition to the anxiety and fears we are all grappling with due to this pandemic, Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders are also having to contend with a rising wave of discrimination and hate crimes. Many in the AAPI community have been wrongly accused of carrying the disease or blamed for starting this pandemic. The coronavirus has mutated into a virus of hate against people of Asian descent, and it must stop.

“The Asian Pacific Policy and Planning Council’s Stop AAPI Hate initiative has recorded over 1,700 COVID-19 related hate incidents nationwide, as of May 13, 2020. In Los Angeles County from February through April of this year, there have been over 100 acts of COVID-19 related hate crimes committed against individuals of Asian descent and others, according to LA County’s Human Relations Commission. Violence is not an option, and all hate crimes must be unequivocally condemned.

“In addition, AAPI restaurateurs are struggling to survive because of the economic impact of the virus, which hit their businesses early on in the pandemic due to misplaced fears. Now more than ever it is important that LA County to do everything in our power to combat this tide of hate, bigotry, and prejudice.”

Anyone who has been a victim of a COVID-19 related hate crime should call the County’s 24/7 multilingual hotline at 2-1-1 to report the incident and to receive support and resources. Click here to read the Board motion.
