LOS ANGELES – The Board of Supervisors today approved a motion authored by Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors Chair Hilda L. Solis, Supervisor to the First District, and co-authored by Supervisor Sheila Kuehl, to proclaim April 2021 as “Sexual Assault Awareness Month” and April 28, 2021 as “Denim Day.”

“By coming together to recognize Sexual Assault Awareness Month and Denim Day, we are acknowledging survivors of sexual assault and initiating dialogue that sheds greater light on this public health issue that continues to plague community members everywhere,” shared Chair Solis. “As a County, we are committed to supporting and elevating survivor’s stories and firmly establishing that sexual assault is not tolerated.”

“For years, women, men, and children who experienced sexual assault were dismissed and demonized, and many victims remained silent out of guilt, shame, and fear,” said Supervisor Sheila Kuehl. “Today, more and more victims, emboldened by campaigns such as Sexual Assault Awareness Month and Denim Day, are finding the courage to speak up and shout #MeToo! Today’s action says to every sexual assault victim, ‘Keep shouting until assault becomes unthinkable.’”

Denim Day is a campaign launched in response to a ruling by the Italian Supreme Court, where a rape conviction was overturned because the justices ruled that the victim implied consent because she wore jeans. The following day, the women in the Italian Parliament rebelled against this ruling by wearing jeans to work, in solidarity with the woman impacted by that decision and to all who are victims of sexual assault.

The passage of today’s motion supports the proclamation of “Sexual Assault Awareness Month” and “Denim Day” in partnership with Peace Over Violence to encourage residents to wear jeans in solidarity with sexual assault survivors.
