LOS ANGELES – The Board of Supervisors today approved a motion authored by Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors Chair Hilda L. Solis, Supervisor to the First District, and co-authored by Supervisor Kathryn Barger, to proclaim April 2021 as “Child Abuse Prevention Month” throughout the County of Los Angeles to raise public awareness of the devastating impact of child abuse and neglect, and to recognize the efforts of professionals and volunteers who work to prevent harm to children and to promote the joy and well-being of children and families.
“As we approach the end of the pandemic, we are seeing the full detrimental impact COVID-19 has had on our most vulnerable community members, particularly children,” shared Chair Solis. “At the onset of the pandemic, we saw a sharp decline in reported child abuse cases resulting from the Safer at Home order in which schools and many County offices were closed to the public. Throughout the pandemic, we have seen the way children’s mental health has been impacted deriving from a lack of in-person instruction and social activities. By proclaiming the month of April as ‘Child Abuse Prevention Month’, we recognize the need for support services to aid children and ultimately, prevent child abuse, while recognizing the efforts of professionals and community members who are committed to ensuring all children have access to a safe, nurturing and love environment.”
“Nothing is as important as the safety and well-being of our children and youth,” said Supervisor Kathryn Barger. “Recognizing Child Abuse Prevention Month is a critical opportunity to raise awareness and support efforts to protect the most vulnerable kids in our community.”
In proclaiming April 2021 as “Child Abuse Prevention Month” in Los Angeles County, the Board of Supervisors joins the Inter-Agency Council on Child Abuse and Neglect (ICAN), ICAN Associates, the Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS), and other County departments to promote the prevention of child abuse and neglect and to bring hope and inspiration to children and families.
