The following is an open community letter signed by Los Angeles County Supervisor Hilda L. Solis, State Sen. Connie Leyva, State Assemblymember Freddie Rodriguez, Pomona Mayor Tim Sandoval, and Pomona City Council members Rubio Gonzalez, Victor Preciado, Nora Garcia, Elizabeth Ontiveros-Cole, and Steve Lustro, who in solidarity urge compassion, unity, and support for the activation of the Sheraton Fairplex to save lives as the number of COVID-19 cases across Los Angeles County continues to rise:

“The coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic must be met with urgency and leadership.  Without such measures, residents will lose loved ones, COVID-19 will continue to spread, and our communities will never be the same.  The use of the Sheraton Fairplex will not put the local community at increased risk.  Instead, designating the Fairplex Sheraton as a quarantine site will protect our families, friends, and neighbors from exposure to COVID-19, and this is exactly the type of immediate action we need to lessen the effects of this public health emergency.  To suggest otherwise runs contrary to national efforts to flatten the curve and is a significant misstep that can cost lives.

“Preserving the public health of the communities we represent is our highest priority.  To that end, we refuse to abdicate our obligation to protect the residents of Pomona and the East San Gabriel Valley.  Without creating safe spaces for people to heal, the health of our residents is in grave danger.  That includes the health of those on the front lines – the firefighters, doctors, nurses, grocery workers, and other residents who are playing a significant role mitigating the spread of the virus.

“We cannot afford to hesitate during this national public health emergency.  The crisis demands swift and decisive action to stop the spread of the virus.  Designating the Sheraton Fairplex as a quarantine site will help mitigate the spread of this virus.”
