LOS ANGELES, Calif. – Los Angeles County Supervisor Hilda L. Solis released the following statement after the Board of Supervisors voted unanimously to pass her urgent motion on addressing emergent illicit substances and contraband entering juvenile halls.
“The reports of illicit substances and contraband being found and used by youth in our juvenile halls have continued and most recently became almost fatal in the last couple of weeks at Barry J. Nidorf Juvenile Hall on two occasions. Sadly, I continue to hear reports of drug use becoming more prevalent among our youth. To prevent any further overdoses or risk of overdoses, all immediate action needs to be taken to support our youth”
The motion approved today directs the County’s Probation Department to report back in 14 days on how they are immediately addressing the flow of illicit substances and contraband. The motion also requests that the Office of Inspector General and Probation Oversight Commission provide a report back on their in-depth and comprehensive investigation into how illicit substances and contraband are entering facilities, including through staff and visitors.
