LOS ANGELES, CA – Today, the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors unanimously approved a motion authored by Supervisor Hilda L. Solis opposing U.S. Senator Lindsey Graham’s recent legislation, S.4840 (Protecting Pain-Capable Unborn Children from Late-Term Abortions Act), which would prohibit the performance of abortion at 15 weeks nationwide.
“Senator Graham is completely wrong. After the devastating Dobbs v. Jackson decision, he argued that the right to an abortion should be left to the state. Yet he introduced a bill that does the complete opposite. Make no mistake about it, a nationwide ban on abortions is strictly about controlling people with reproductive systems. And the disturbing media reports already coming to light on pregnant people being denied an abortion even after being raped and impregnated, or carrying a fetus diagnosed with genetic abnormalities is repulsive. I am committed to continuing to introduce proposals to protect the fundamental right to abortion and reproductive health care. Opposing S. 4840 is the next necessary action,” said Supervisor Solis.
The motion passed today directs the County’s Chief Executive Office – Legislative Affairs and Intergovernmental Relations Branch to oppose S.4840 and similar proposals.
