Supervisor Hilda L. Solis has issued the following statement in response to President Donald Trump stating that he would sign an executive order ending birthright citizenship:
“Birthright citizenship is a right that is clearly enshrined in the U.S. Constitution – and it is a right in more than 30 other countries. It is not something that Donald Trump could simply repeal through an executive order. No one, and certainly not the President of the United States, can defy the Constitution.
We must call Donald Trump’s suggestion that he could personally end birthright citizenship what it actually is: an electoral stunt. Like sending thousands of troops to the border to ‘protect’ the United States from starving families fleeing poverty and violence, this is yet another a political ploy ginned up by the White House only seven days before the most important midterm elections of our lifetimes.
Like all federal officials, Donald Trump swore an oath to protect and defend the Constitution of the United States. The Presidency is not an autocracy.
One week from today, Americans have an opportunity to say that we do not stand for division and fear. Today is the last day to request a vote-by-mail ballot for the midterm elections. On November 6th, I hope everyone joins me in voting for unity, for equality, and for our communities.”
