Background: Arts organizations are vital and influential members of the diverse culture in Los Angeles. It is important for these groups to reflect the diversity of Los Angeles County to effectively serve their audiences. Supervisor Solis’ motion, which she introduced at today’s Board of Supervisor’s meeting, calls for a diverse task force of arts leaders to engage in a community dialogue and to make recommendations regarding the best ways to ensure cultural equity at all levels of relevant arts venues. The purpose of the motion is to spark a County-wide dialogue that leads to specific recommendations on ways in which arts venues can diversify their boards, staffs, audiences and program offerings and create a robust pipeline for future arts leaders from diverse communities. A recent study released by the Mellon Foundation showed among museum leaders across the country only 4 percent are African American and 3 percent are Hispanic.
