Supervisor Hilda L. Solis this week championed a Los Angeles County Executive Directive that instructs the County’s Treasurer and Tax Collector to work with property owners who have been impacted by COVID-19 and who struggle to pay their property taxes on time.

“COVID-19 has adversely affected businesses and families who live paycheck to paycheck,” said Supervisor Solis. “LA County will help individuals who are enduring a hardship due to the outbreak. I will work to ensure that County residents will get through this critical time and that families stay in their homes and do not risk experiencing homelessness because they cannot pay their rent, monthly mortgage, or property tax. Now is the time to extend leniency and understanding to struggling families.”

Under the executive directive, beginning on April 11, the day after property taxes are due, people unable to pay on time for reasons related to COVID-19 may submit a request for penalty cancellation online. The County Department of the Treasurer and Tax Collector has established a team to process requests from individuals who demonstrate they have been affected by the outbreak.

“We understand this is a very stressful time, especially for those suffering direct effects from this public health crisis, and my office is committed to helping in any way we can,” said LA County’s Treasurer and Tax Collector Keith Knox.

Knox will launch a public awareness campaign to promote payment options available to taxpayers who are following the practice of social distancing. Since County buildings are currently closed to the general public, property owners who can pay their taxes on time are being directed to submit their payment either online, by telephone, or through the mail. This revenue helps keep government operations running and provides vital services that the public relies on, especially in these trying times.
