Los Angeles County Supervisor Hilda L. Solis released the following statement after the Metro Board of Directors approved her Board motion, co-authored by Directors Garcetti, Bonin, Dupont-Walker, Butts and Hahn, to explore the feasibility of offering all students in the County free Metro transit service when they are going to school:
“As cash-strapped families struggle to provide basic needs for their children, transportation costs should not be a barrier for students traveling to school. We all know that children who attend school regularly increase their chances of obtaining a college degree and of earning higher wages as adults.
“Today, we will undertake a comprehensive review to explore the possibility of overcoming this obstacle that has impeded students from going to school on a consistent basis. This could help students who attend LAUSD, a community college, or any other school district in LA County. This is an important investment in our communities, our students, and our economy.”
