LOS ANGELES, CA – Los Angeles County Supervisor Hilda L. Solis released the following statement after the Board of Supervisors approved her motion to send a five-signature letter to the secretary of the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) in support of the State of California’s request to extend the Elderly Simplified Application Project (ESAP) Demonstration Project, which has proven successful in reducing barriers to people who are elderly or have a disability receiving CalFresh benefits.

“Food insecurity is a significant issue across Los Angeles County during these unprecedented times. As the COVID-19 pandemic has illuminated, those who are elderly as well as people who have a disability, face significant challenges every day including not knowing where their next meal will come from. Barrier-reducing initiatives such as ESAP must be encouraged and supported because no person who is elderly or has a disability should have to go hungry in Los Angeles County.”
