LOS ANGELES, Calif. — Los Angeles County Chair Pro Tem and First District Supervisor Hilda L. Solis yesterday issued the following statement on the passing of John Burton:

“I am deeply saddened by the passing of John Burton, a giant and a tireless advocate for the poor. I just spoke with him last week, and his passion and commitment to our communities were as strong as ever. John was one of my mentors, and his guidance profoundly shaped my work in public service. He was a fierce advocate for progressive values and a champion of working people. His legacy is woven into the fabric of California, from landmark labor reforms to environmental protections and civil rights advancements. I was proud to support his selection as Senate President Pro Tempore during my time in the California State Senate, a role in which he continued to fight for those most vulnerable. Through the John Burton Advocates for Youth foundation and the Transitional Age Youth (TAY) program, he made a lasting difference in the lives of countless young people—work I was proud to support. While we mourn his loss, we celebrate the enduring impact John has had on our state and its people. My prayers are with his family, friends, and all who were touched by his legacy.”
