EL MONTE, Calif. — Los Angeles County Board Chair and First District Supervisor Hilda L. Solis has ordered all County flags to be flown at half-staff this week following the death of El Monte Police Department Senior Detective Armando “Mando” Santa Anna.

“Detective Santa Anna dedicated his life to protecting the people of El Monte,” said Board Chair Solis. “As someone who lives in this city, I share in the deep loss felt across our community. Santa Anna died Sunday, March 15, 2026, due to complications from a preplanned surgery related to a work-related injury.

He served the El Monte Police Department and the community for 24 years, working assignments including patrol, school resource officer and, most recently, senior detective. Santa Anna was widely respected by colleagues and community members for his professionalism, dedication to public service and unwavering commitment to the residents he served.

Before entering law enforcement, Santa Anna played baseball at the collegiate and professional levels and later remained connected to the sport as a baseball talent scout. He was known for his love of the game and for mentoring and supporting others both on and off the field.

“Armando ‘Mando’ Santa Anna was a true pillar of our El Monte community,” said Viviana Longoria, Mayor Pro Tem for the City of El Monte. “He gave so much of himself through his work as a detective and through the guidance and encouragement he offered others. I extend my deepest condolences to his family, friends, and coworkers. His dedication and generosity will be remembered by all who knew him.”
