LOS ANGELES, Calif.Los Angeles County Chair Pro Tem and First District Supervisor Hilda L. Solis issued the following statement on the start of Hispanic Heritage Month:

“As Hispanic Heritage Month begins today, I am proud to announce that I have introduced a motion, scheduled for a vote at tomorrow’s September 16 Board of Supervisors meeting, to proclaim September 15 to October 15, 2025, as Hispanic Heritage Month in Los Angeles County.

This is a time to honor the heritage, culture, and contributions of Latino communities, who represent nearly half of the County’s population and play a central role in shaping our region’s identity and future. From public service and education to arts, business, and grassroots advocacy, Latino communities continue to lead, build, and inspire across every sector of society.

This year, however, Hispanic Heritage Month begins under a cloud of concern. The U.S. Supreme Court has issued a deeply alarming decision that authorizes roving immigration patrols across Los Angeles County and surrounding areas. This ruling allows federal officers to stop individuals based on language, appearance, or occupation. It opens the door to racial profiling and sends a harmful and dangerous message to the very communities this month is meant to uplift.

Los Angeles County stands firmly against this decision. We will not be silent. We remain committed to protecting the civil rights and dignity of all residents, regardless of the color of their skin or the language they speak. Through every legal, policy, and community-based tool available, we will push back against discriminatory enforcement and ensure our communities are safe, respected, and supported.

Hispanic Heritage Month is more than a celebration. It is a call to action. In a moment when our values are being tested, Los Angeles County will continue to stand in solidarity with our Latino communities and fight for the future we all deserve.”
